- Express Entry System
- Provincial Nomination Program
- Atlantic Immigration Program
- Express Entry System
This is the most popular immigration program in Canada and it is also one of the fastest and easiest immigration programs in Canada. The good thing about the program is that you can get permanent residency to Canada directly from the program.
It is an online program and so you as an applicant will have to create an online profile where you will fill up the requirements for the program. The requirements for the program will determine your eligibility status and they are:
- Age (at least 18 years)
- Work experience or training
- Language fluency test results in English or French
- Provincial nomination
You will be expected to complete your profile within 60 days after which you will be placed in a pool with other applicants and a draw will be conducted. The program uses a ranking system called the Comprehensive Ranking System and in the system, applicants will be given a CRS score to be matched against a CRS cut-off score in the draw that will be conducted and applicants that meet or exceed the CRS cut-off score will be selected to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency in Canada.
The draws are conducted twice in a month and if you were not successful in the first draw you participated in, you can participate in another draw as you profile can stay in the system for up to a year.
Well, this system is managed under three federal programs and they are:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program
- Federal Skilled Trades Program
- Canadian Experience Class
As a carpenter, you will be eligible for the Federal Skilled Trade Program (FSTP) as the program is for foreign skilled trade workers that want to immigrate to Canada and since carpenters are under trade jobs; this is the program you will be eligible for under the Express Entry System.
You don’t need a job offer to apply through any of the programs under the Express Entry System.
The eligibility requirements for this program are:
- You should not be lower than 18 years of age
- You should have a paid work experience of at least two years whether part-time or full-time
- There is no educational requirement for a skilled trade worker but having it can increase you score.
- You must meet the required language level in English or French in each language ability (speaking, writing, reading and listening)
- You should have sufficient funds to support you to settle in Canada and also take care of any other family member coming with you unless you have a valid job offer
- You must successfully pass the security background check meaning you have no criminal record
- You must pass the medical examination check meaning you are in sound health
- The Provincial Nomination Program
This is a program that is designed for the provinces in Canada to help them nominate foreign immigrants to come fill up labour shortages in the province. Through this program, employers in the participating provinces are able to hire foreign skilled workers to come fill up job positions.
As a carpenter, there are a lot of job opportunities for you across the provinces in Canada like Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan.
You should know that there are 13 provinces in Canada but only 11 of these provinces are participating in the Provincial Nomination Program and so they have their own nomination program and they are in charge of the requirements for the program.
These 11 Provincial Nomination Programs are:
- Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP)
- British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP)
- Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP)
- New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NW PNP)
- Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NL PNP)
- Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP)
- Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program (NS PNP)
- Ontario Provincial Nominee Program (OINP)
- Prince Edward Island Provincial Nominee Program (PEI PNP)
- Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP)
- Yukon Nominee Program (YNP)
For you to be eligible to apply through the program you must have a job offer from an employer in any of the participating provinces and mind you, these provinces do not give you permanent residency or approve your application for permanent residency. They only nominate foreign skilled workers to get permanent residency.
You can choose to apply for this program through the direct application process where you will have to submit your application through mail or courier service or you can submit your application online by going through the Express Entry linked to PNP.
The thing is that the direct application process takes about 15 to 19 months while the Express Entry linked to PNP takes about 6 to 8 months; so the choice is yours.
How can you become a Carpenter in Canada?
If you are not yet a certified or qualified carpenter, you can go through apprenticeship where you will take like three to four years to complete and when taking the apprenticeship program, you could be earning salary for work you do and this could be around half of what a qualified carpenter earns.
One good thing about this is that it increases every month till you become a certified carpenter which is also called a journeyman.
You will do a lot of practical work during your technical training for four years before you then write you certification examination to make you a certified carpenter.
During your training program, you will pay for fees, textbooks, personal protective tools and then registration with the trades union. You will certainly be one step away from getting your permanent residence as many provinces in Canada need carpenters and other skilled tradespersons.
